This Weekend in Cincinnati

It’s going to be a hot, beautiful weekend and the only place to be is outside. Lots of great things going on; Kings Island opens for the year on Saturday and I’m sure the place will be packed with people of all ages, from the coaster enthusiasts waiting hours to check out Diamondback and Firehawk, or the parents and kids checking out the all new Planet Snoopy.

I’ll be making my yearly trip to Sawyer Point on Saturday for the Earth Day Celebration. This year, The Turkeys, The Comet Bluegrass All Stars and Wild Carrot, featuring Pam Temple of WNKU, are playing on the P&G Pavilion Stage. Check out exhibits from environmental groups, climb the rock wall, pet the baby animals from Sunrock Farm and check out those crazy fish that swim in the Ohio River. The event runs nearly all day long, from noon to 5:30 pm.

Other Earth Day related events include EcoSculpt at Fountain Square which features sculptures from local artists made of recyclable materials, and a couple of things going on in Northside such as the R-R and R party at Northside Tavern featuring music by Nathan Holscher & the Ohio 5 and the 5K run at Spring Grove Cemetery.

Saturday is also Record Store Day, a day which celebrates independently-owned stores, which are the only places you should go to buy music. These places not only have a much better selection and better prices, but the people who run these stores truly care about music, not something you’ll find at the big chains. The Seedy Seeds will be performing at Northside’s Shake It at 9 pm, while Ric Hickey and Sammy Wulfeck of Sparrow Bellows will be performing at Mole’s in Clifton. Everybody’s Records on Montgomery Road has got quite a cast all day long, from Kim Taylor at noon, followed by Magnolia Mountain, Roger Klug, Tickled Pink, Zombies Everywhere and Ilyas of Tanya Morgan.

Later that night, head over to the Southgate House for singer/songwriter Will Kimbrough and The Tillers.
