Strong Ending to 2009 for Cincinnati and Music
December 3rd, 2009
Posted in Concerts
I’ve been looking over the event calenders for the month of December for many of the local music venues in town, and all I can say is that I hope we don’t have a bad winter, meaning ”no slick icy roads.” There’s actually too much going on at places like the Southgate House, Northside Tavern, Mad Hatter and Madison Theater, and if it were possible, I’d be out there every night…that is if I had the time and money. But if you love checking out concerts in the Cincy area, you should be all over town this month.

Places To Go For Live Music Tonight
October 17th, 2009
Posted in Concerts, Local Music
Bogart’s
2621 Vine St
(513)281-8400
From the ashes of the popular 90’s hardcore/punk band, At the Drive-In, comes The Mars Volta. After the formation of the band in 2001, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala would go on to assemble of large rotating cast of musician’s, earning them Grammy Awards not long after. Part prog rock, part jazz fusion, even a little bits of Latin and Salsa music, but a whole heck of a lot of experimentation and improvisation has dubbed this raw, energetic band as one of the greatest live shows of the decade. Enjoy a track from their most recent album, Octahedron.
Southgate House
24 E 3rd St
(859)431-2201
It’s not quite Halloween yet, but the Southgate House is celebrating tonight like it is. It’s the 10th Annual Witches Ball in the ballroom, featuring music by Dante’s Gypsy Circus, Tree of Life, Chakras, Mayan Ruins, Zahara and Folie a Trois. Actors will also be performing the Time Warp scene from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Upstairs in the parlour, it’s Captain Jack’s Pirate Party featuring vendors, readers, door prizes and food.
The Mad Hatter
620 Scott St
(859)291-2233
It’s not just about the bands playing tonight at the Mad Hatter. This night also belongs to one of the area’s most loved and dedicated music fans: Pat Rice, or Punk Rock Grandma or Punk Rock Pat as you may know her. For his senior project while at the University of Cincinnati, Chris Grannen created a documentary following Punk Rock Grandma’s involvement in the local music scene over the past decade, which will see its public debut screening tonight. Accompanied with interviews from local musicians and critics, as well as a soundtrack featuring local bands like The Guitars, Frankl Project and Elbow Drop. As for the music, some of Pat’s favs are on tonight’s bill like The Pinstripes, The Guitars, Loudmouth, 20th Century Tokyo Princess, Losanti and OddJob. It’s only $5, with most of the proceeds going to support Pat’s transportation costs. Pat’s a very generous, lovable music fanatic, and always enjoys the company of other local music fans, so don’t hesitate to introduce yourself to this beloved local music icon.
Northside Tavern
4163 Hamilton Avenue
(513)542-3603
Another Halloween themed show happening tonight is Death Becomes Her, presented by the unofficial Queen of Northside, Krystal LaMour. It starts at 10:30 pm and will be followed by music from a local staple in the music scene, The Tigerlilies, at 12:30 am.
College Hill Coffee Company
6128 Hamilton Avenue
(513)542-2739
Enjoy the cozy, friendly, laid-back atmosphere of the College Hill Coffee Company tonight, while listening to the cozy, friendly, laid-back vocals and acoustic guitar playing from local singer/songwriter Ryan Adcock. Enjoy soups, salads, sandwiches, homemade desserts and a large selection of coffees and international teas at their full espresso and coffee bar. Also available are some unique retail gift items, perfect for your loved ones this Christmas.
What’s Going On This Weekend
October 8th, 2009
Posted in Concerts, Local Music
Friday
I often say things like “re-live the past” or “take a step back into time” when referring to bands that are reuniting and such, so let me just say that this will be that type of night in the Southgate House ballroom. Local garage/punk rock heroes, The Customs (or Kustoms) are celebrating a re-release of Long Gone. Also on the bill are Pittsburgh’s The Cynics and locals The Long Gones, who got their name from the same record. Playing in the lounge is Los Honchos. For show times, directions and ticket info visit the Southgate House website.
The Mad Hatter has long been one of the better venues in town to check out harder and heavier music. Tonight features just that kind of lineup, with Slick Idiot, Pluto Revolts, Chakras, Another Tragedy, Blood Werks, Riot Head and Common Man Down. For show time, directions and ticket info visit the Mad Hatter website.
Northside Tavern is one of the better venues on the Ohio side of the river to catch original music. The outside patio’s always nice when the weather’s good, but tonight everyone should be crammed into the newer back room for Culture Queer, The Kiss Me Everlasting and Human Reunion. Shows generally start at 10 pm and are always free, but visit the Northside Tavern website anyways.
There’s always a lot going on during the weekend that is enjoyable at no cost. Some of those venues include The Comet, who’ve got Cletus Romp tonight, Arnold’s, who has the Catfish Evans Trio and Lagnaippe playing, Rohs Street Cafe, who has Kevin Huber, The Seasons and Justin Skaggs playing, and Stanley’s Pub, who has the Suburbanites and Frankly Speaking playing. You can usually find a ton of places around town that offer concerts at a very small cost. Places like the Mad Frog, who have Red Wanting Blue and Eric Matthew Tepe playing, The Redmoor, who has Smooth Jazz Night with Marvin Curry and DJ Perry Simmons, and the Blue Wisp Jazz Club, who has the Rusty Burge Quartet and Delbert Williams playing.
Back over in Kentucky, the classy Madison Theater has a big lineup. On the bill are The Western, Calloused, Last Days, Ghostbear, Anastello, Super Tuesday, Walk the Moon and Back to the Sky. For show time, directions, parking and ticket info visit the Madison Theater website.
Saturday
I’ll go ahead and mention this, although I’m not a fan. The biggest concert of the weekend belongs to Jay-Z and an entourage featuring N.E.R.D., Wale and J. Cole. They’re playing the new Bank of Kentucky Center on the campus of Northern Kentucky University.
My favorite show of the night takes place at my least favorite music venue in town, Bogart’s. Keller Williams, a 39-year old Deadhead/wannabe hippie brings of bunch of guitars, drum machines and live looping equipment to prove he’s the greatest musician who works alone.
It’ll be another packed weekend at the Southgate House. Andrew McMahon of Jack’s Mannequin is playing a sold-out show in the ballroom, while Jessica Lea Mayfield and the Old Ceremony play upstairs in the parlour. For show times, directions, parking and ticket info visit the Southgate House website.
A Decade to Die For are releasing their long-awaited full-length, debut album, with a release show at the Mad Hatter. Also on the bill are Counterfeit Money Machine, The Paramedic and Zebras in Public. For show time, directions and ticket info visit the Mad Hatter website.
It’s looking like a nice October afternoon (no rain, highs about 60 degrees), which should be nice for the Sayler Park Harvest Festival. There’s art (which you can either buy or create), there’s music, food, games and a whole lot more. Ryan Adcock/Craig Dockery’s new band, Flaregun, takes the stage at 1 pm. For more info on this festival, visit their Facebook page here.
As for all that other cheaper and free stuff, the Northside Tavern’s got Bootleg Rider, Animal Circles and Cash Flagg, The Comet’s got Sleepy Bird, the Mad Frog has Brooks Bauer and Incline District, Harvey’s (the old Blue Note) has Mad Anthony and California Wives, Arnold’s has Hobo Shamen, Rohs Street Cafe has Mayan Ruins and Faebotica, Stanley’s Pub has Noah Wotherspoon and Jessi Bair, the Blue Wisp has Brasilia and Steve Barone.
Sunday
Sunday’s always a low key day, but there’s still some great stuff going on. Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek returns to the Southgate House for the second time in five months, the Rattlesnakin’ Daddies are at Northside Tavern, the Comet Bluegrass Allstars are playing where else but The Comet and SOUSE are at the Blue Wisp.
October at Bogart’s: Shows to Know
October 5th, 2009

Saturday, October 10 (9 pm)
Keller Williams, a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, is known as a “one man jamband.” The former Deadhead began playing music in the early ’90s, combining elements of bluegrass, folk, alternative rock, reggae, jazz, funk, electronica and dance. His live shows are an incredible thing to witness, as he has mastered the process of live looping, bouncing back and forth from guitars, percussion and synthesizers. He has released several solo albums, but as a respected musician in the jamband community, he has performed and worked with a number of bands and artists like the String Cheese Incident, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, Michael Franti, Charlie Hunter, Bela Fleck, Fareed Haque, Steve Kimock, John Molo, John Scofield and Victor Wooten. He often works cover songs into his show, putting interesting spins on songs from Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, the Grateful Dead, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Van Morrison and the Sugarhill Gang. Prior to releasing his latest effort this past August, he spent much of the summer releasing tracks from the album every week. Prepare to have your mind blown.
Wednesday, October 14 (8 pm)
Speaking of multi-instrumentalists, Andrew Bird rolls into town this month. A classically-trained musician since the age of four, Bird has also mastered the process of live looping, and the use of instruments like violin, guitar, mandolin and glockenspiel, as well as the art of whistling. His first taste of commercial success came with the band Squirrel Nut Zippers, with whom he performed with in the mid-to-late ’90s. He has worked in various settings, from assembling different bands, to only solo, to working with other artists that include Neko Case, The Verve Pipe, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Bobby Bare, Jr., Ani DiFranco, Charlie Louvin, Loney, Dear and Thao with the Get Down Stay Down. He released Noble Beast very early this year, which is considered his best material yet, receiving high praises from Paste, Pitchfork, Spin and Rolling Stone, to name a few.
Joining Bird on the tour is yet another multi-instrumentalist, Annie Clark, otherwise known as St. Vincent. She attended the Berklee College of Music, only to drop out after three years. That may have actually been a wise decision, because shortly after she joined the massive, twenty-piece psychedelic/symphonic pop band, the Polyphonic Spree. After a few years with the Spree, she would go on to work in Sufjan Stevens band, and finally would release her debut, solo album in 2007. Earlier this year she released the follow-up, entitled Actor, which also received high praises, debuting at #90 on the Billboard 200. This show is one of my favorite picks of the entire year.
Saturday, October 17 (9 pm)
The theme for October at Bogart’s certainly seems to be “have your mind blown/have your face melted.” I can’t believe that all these shows take place in just a week’s time. The last show of that week period will truly knock you flat on your butt. Grammy Award-winning outfit, The Mars Volta, are bringing their insane, intense, chaotic mix of prog, experimental, jazz fusion and Latin and Salsa music. Formed by Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, the Mars Volta rose from the ashes of the popular ’90s punk band, At the Drive-In. There was a band called De Facto, which is often thought of as the Mars Volta in its earliest form, although they were heavily influenced by dub and reggae, and the music of King Tubby and Lee “Scratch” Perry. Named Rolling Stone’s “Best Prog-Rock Band of 2008″, the Mars Volta are considered to have one of the best live shows in all of the current and hottest non-mainstream, commercial bands. This should be a great week for Bogart’s.

Sunday, September 20
(My Pick) Northside Tavern – Classical Revolution – 9 pm – Free
If you happened to attend last week’s Newbees show in the Southgate House lounge, then you witnessed one of the best groups of string players (six violinists and a cellist) called the Bee Strings. They kicked off the show last week with some pieces from Bach and Mozart, and later backed the Newbees for some original material and some covers that included the Beatles “Something” and the Swell Season’s “Falling Slowly”, which was played during soundcheck. The Classical Revolution features some of those same amazing string players.
