Strong Ending to 2009 for Cincinnati and Music
December 3rd, 2009
Posted in Concerts
I’ve been looking over the event calenders for the month of December for many of the local music venues in town, and all I can say is that I hope we don’t have a bad winter, meaning ”no slick icy roads.” There’s actually too much going on at places like the Southgate House, Northside Tavern, Mad Hatter and Madison Theater, and if it were possible, I’d be out there every night…that is if I had the time and money. But if you love checking out concerts in the Cincy area, you should be all over town this month.

Places To Go For Live Music Tonight
October 17th, 2009
Posted in Concerts, Local Music
Bogart’s
2621 Vine St
(513)281-8400
From the ashes of the popular 90’s hardcore/punk band, At the Drive-In, comes The Mars Volta. After the formation of the band in 2001, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala would go on to assemble of large rotating cast of musician’s, earning them Grammy Awards not long after. Part prog rock, part jazz fusion, even a little bits of Latin and Salsa music, but a whole heck of a lot of experimentation and improvisation has dubbed this raw, energetic band as one of the greatest live shows of the decade. Enjoy a track from their most recent album, Octahedron.
Southgate House
24 E 3rd St
(859)431-2201
It’s not quite Halloween yet, but the Southgate House is celebrating tonight like it is. It’s the 10th Annual Witches Ball in the ballroom, featuring music by Dante’s Gypsy Circus, Tree of Life, Chakras, Mayan Ruins, Zahara and Folie a Trois. Actors will also be performing the Time Warp scene from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Upstairs in the parlour, it’s Captain Jack’s Pirate Party featuring vendors, readers, door prizes and food.
The Mad Hatter
620 Scott St
(859)291-2233
It’s not just about the bands playing tonight at the Mad Hatter. This night also belongs to one of the area’s most loved and dedicated music fans: Pat Rice, or Punk Rock Grandma or Punk Rock Pat as you may know her. For his senior project while at the University of Cincinnati, Chris Grannen created a documentary following Punk Rock Grandma’s involvement in the local music scene over the past decade, which will see its public debut screening tonight. Accompanied with interviews from local musicians and critics, as well as a soundtrack featuring local bands like The Guitars, Frankl Project and Elbow Drop. As for the music, some of Pat’s favs are on tonight’s bill like The Pinstripes, The Guitars, Loudmouth, 20th Century Tokyo Princess, Losanti and OddJob. It’s only $5, with most of the proceeds going to support Pat’s transportation costs. Pat’s a very generous, lovable music fanatic, and always enjoys the company of other local music fans, so don’t hesitate to introduce yourself to this beloved local music icon.
Northside Tavern
4163 Hamilton Avenue
(513)542-3603
Another Halloween themed show happening tonight is Death Becomes Her, presented by the unofficial Queen of Northside, Krystal LaMour. It starts at 10:30 pm and will be followed by music from a local staple in the music scene, The Tigerlilies, at 12:30 am.
College Hill Coffee Company
6128 Hamilton Avenue
(513)542-2739
Enjoy the cozy, friendly, laid-back atmosphere of the College Hill Coffee Company tonight, while listening to the cozy, friendly, laid-back vocals and acoustic guitar playing from local singer/songwriter Ryan Adcock. Enjoy soups, salads, sandwiches, homemade desserts and a large selection of coffees and international teas at their full espresso and coffee bar. Also available are some unique retail gift items, perfect for your loved ones this Christmas.
Three Places To Be Tonight For Music

Northside Tavern
4163 Hamilton Avenue
(513)542-3603
Local alternative, folk-rock band, The Chocolate Horse, is throwing a vinyl release party for their second album, We Don’t Stand on Ceremony. Led by Jason Snell, the Horse creates a very unique sound with the use of both acoustic and electric guitars and basses, the banjo, various flutes, drums and percussion, and of course keys, which are played by the band’s newest member, Sharon Udoh. Also on the bill for tonight is Comet DJ, Bryan Dilsizian, and Me or the Moon, which features a cast of who’s who in the local music scene including Matthew Shelton, Victor Strunk (The Hiders, Ruby Vileos), Tony Franklin (The Hiders) and Joe Klug (Wussy). The party’s free and starts at 10 pm in the back room.
Southgate House
24 E 3rd St
(859)431-2201
Miami indie-pop buzz band, The Postmarks, have been getting a lot of attention since releasing their first EP in early 2007, and that attention has been building ever since. Not even three years after the fact, they have released a full length disc every year since (The Postmarks in 2007, By the Numbers
in 2008 and Memoirs At The End Of The World
in 2009). They’ve also racked up a lot of miles on the odometer, touring with bands like Smoosh and Memphis, and performing at festivals like Lollapalooza. They’ll be in the ballroom tonight with a couple of local buzz bands, Eat Sugar and You, You’re Awesome. The show starts at 9:30 pm and tickets are $10.
But that’s not the only show going on tonight at Newport’s historical, haunted mansion. They’ve got three rooms of music and an art gallery on the top floor. Go up the first flight of stairs to the parlour and you’ll find Americana/indie-folk band, Brad Hoshaw & the Seven Deadlies from Omaha, and psychedelic/soul group, The 1959 Hat Company, who have members from Toledo, Detroit and Seattle. If you walk out of the parlour, you’ll find another set of stairs leading to the top floor art gallery. It’s the 14th Annual Garage/Art and Horror Sale Part II, featuring fifteen local artists. If you take an immediate left as soon as you walk through the main front doors of the building, you’ll find Sean and Mike from local Americana/roots band, The Tillers, playing in Juney’s Lounge. For ticket information and show times, visit the Southgate House website.
Molly Malone’s
112 E 4th St
(859)491-6659
I hope the owners of Molly Malone’s know what they got themselves into. The third floor will turn into a madhouse tonight with the loud, guitar-driven rock from three great local bands: The Lions Rampant, who are up for a couple CEA’s this year including “Best Live Act” (they’ve also got their long-awaited debut full-length on the way), State Song, who have been nominated for a CEA for “Best New Artist” and also have their debut full-length on the way, and The Guitars (making their tenth public appearance), who are another great local band but somehow managed to slip through the cracks for a CEA nomination. Contact Molly Malone’s for ticket information and show times.
